Christmas Music

This post is part of Music Monday, on the Bloggable Music Network.

You’re probably already hearing Christmas music in the retail stores. We don’t officially play it in our house until the day after Christmas (oops. Thanksgiving. Thanks Patti), but then it’s non-stop until Christmas day. We love it.

Here’s the big ones we’ll be playing in the Joseph cars and home (and some iTunes links for you to check them out):

A Charlie Brown Christmas - Vince Guaraldi Trio. The ULTIMATE Christmas soundtrack. Makes me smile every time it plays.

Snow Angels - Over The Rhine. Haunting and beautiful. And there’s an amazing instrumental track called “Goodbye Charles” that’s a bit of a nod to Guaraldi.

At Christmas - James Taylor. Come on. It’s James Taylor. It’s Christmas music. You HAVE to love it.

In The Spirit - Michael McDonald. The link is to Amazon, because this CD isn’t on iTunes. According to Amazon, it’s out of print. Find it. Buy it. Love it.

Christmas Portrait - The Carpenters. Is there anything better than Karen Carpenter singing “Merry Christmas, Darling”? I submit to you that there is not.

The Christmas Song - Nat “King” Cole. ‘Nuff said.

Let There Be Peace On Earth - U.S. Army Field Band. We have a dear friend who is a featured tenor with the Army Field Band. But even if we didn’t, this CD is beautiful.

I’m also looking forward to plugging “Christmas” into Pandora Radio and finding out what happens!

Did I leave off one of your must-haves?

Does this mean you started playing Christmas music on 12/26/07 and will play until 12/25/08? Or, does it mean you will start playing Christmas music on 12/26/08 and will continue to play it until 12/25/09? OR, is it possible you meant to say day after Thanksgiving until Christmas Day.

:-) sorry couldn’t resist!!!!

I always have to listen to Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas”. That, with The Carpenters and Vince Guaraldi, make my holiday complete. But, like you (intended to say) only between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I like Sara Groves’ new Christmas album - the original songs are really good.

We get to start the Christmas Music the day after Veterans Day (seeing as I grew up in Canada, and Thanksgiving is in October… a little bit too soon). So we’re already pulling out the Old Faithfuls. Right now, in heavy rotation:
Bruce Cockburn “Christmas”
The Chieftains “Bells of Dublin”
“A Soulful Celebration” (Quincy Jones does Handel’s Messiah!)
(and I know there are more, but these three are just the spectacular tip of the iceberg)

Now I officially need the James Taylor Christmas album. You just sold me on it. okay, and the Carpenters. I love it ALL.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Relient K’s Christmas CD
Gary Hoey

Gary Hoey? Never heard of him…off we go to Google.

I love Amy Grant’s song “Tennessee Christmas”. And I’m with you on Karen Carpenter singing “Merry Christmas, Darling”…one of my all-time favorites.

Fun…looks like I’m going to be adding some music to my iPod. I love Christmas music! Thanks!

Sufjan Stevens’ “Songs for Christmas.” It’s four volumes of deliciously eccentric Christmas awesomeness…each volume has a slightly different feel, but they all have Sufjan’s signature sound.

Nobody sings a Christmas tune quite like Karen Carpenter of the Carpenters. She has such a beautiful lilt in her voice as she sings the songs of the season. I am especially fond of her rendition of “(There’s No Place Like) Home For The Holidays”, she does such a warm and cheerful rendition.
