Watercooler Wednesday - Not Cute Enough For TV

(This post is part of Watercooler Wednesday)
You’ve probably seen it on the news already. The adorable little girl that sang during the Beijing opening ceremonies? She was doing a Milli Vanilli. Lip-synching.

Why? Because a member of China’s Politburo decided that THIS girl, who actually sang the song, wasn’t attractive enough for television.

Needless to say, there’s a bit of controversy over the decision. But it makes me wonder…what’s the big deal?

After all, what’s “American Idol”? Has an ugly great singer ever made it to the final five? What’s the point of “Extreme Makeover” - ‘This person is too unattractive to have a fair shot at life, so let’s fix them’. And where are the fat ugly guys and the cigarette-stained-smile, tattooed women in the beer commercials?

Was it a poor decision? Yeah, I think so.

But are we any different?

Oh she is so precious. She’s too cute FOR TV. How ridiculous.

We do this sort of thing in the church, too. Jon Acuff has an interesting post up today (Aug 15) at Stuff Christians Like about music pastors whose wives always end up with the big solos.

In the church of the future, if present trends continue, we’ll only be looking at the soloist on screens anyway, and technology will have mastered some kind of live Photoshop-styled enhancement that will give everyone perfect teeth, perfect skin and perfect hair.
