Satisfaction

I have to confess that sometimes I get jealous. Of other people. Specifically, the “other” people that have more money than I do.
And it usually happens (of course) when I’m watching television.

After all, isn’t that the holy grail of advertising? To convince someone that they really need something they don’t have? And they do it SO well.

I see the ads for big-screen plasma televisions, and note to myself that they just keep getting cheaper and cheaper. And I want one.

I see the ads for cruises, for vacations to other states in the USA that I’ve never seen, and I want to see it. And I want my family to see it.

I see the ads for new cars, and I want something shinier and newer than I have.

But…

I remember that if I DID get a big-screen TV, then I’d need a BluRay player. And a surround sound system. And a nicer chair. And now it’s not cheaper anymore.

I remember that my family is very happy and blessed. And if they never stand at the rim of the Grand Canyon, they’re not going to hate me for it.

And I like my car.

And there’s a few other things I remember…

Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes on them? (Ecclesiastes 5:10-11)

O LORD, by your hand save me from such men, from men of this world whose reward is in this life. You still the hunger of those you cherish; their sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children. And I - in righteousness I will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness. (Psalm 17:14-15)

So, I’m good. Thanks.

Great post Paul. I need to apply these truths to my life also. We’d have so much less to worry about if we lived by these.

TV is bad!
