Watercooler Wednesday - Movie Chills
By Paul on May 7, 2008 in Movies, Watercooler Wednesday
No, I’m not talking about horror movies or scary, “made-you-jump” moments. What’s the ONE scene in your favorite movie (or any movie) that sent the proverbial chills up your spine? And remember, slasher/horror movies are disqualified.
Maybe you have more than one. A few that come to MY mind…
- Return Of The King - Elrond gives the sword to Aragorn, and says “Put aside the Ranger. Become who you were born to be.”
- Field Of Dreams - Kevin Costner asks his father to play catch with him…and then the camera pulls back and you see miles and miles of headlights. Back to back chill moments.
- Star Trek: First Contact - End of the movie, the “first contact” alien is coming off his ship, and pulls back his hood to reveal that he’s a Vulcan (I know. I am such a geek).
- Monsters, Inc. - End of the movie, Sully’s face when he sees Boo again (I know. I am such a softie).
(This post is part of Watercooler Wednesday)

1. Fatal Attraction: When Glenn Close rose back up out of that bath water, everyone in the theatre screamed.
2. Silence of the Lambs: The last five minutes…see #1.
3. Psycho: NOT the shower scene, but again, the last five or so minutes, first where Norman’s mom is revealed (yechh), then the very last sequence where the camera slowly pans over Norman as he sits in the padded room, “not hurting a fly.” He stares directly at the camera, andYEEEESHHHH!
4. Cape Fear: Both versions have scenes that will make you jump: in the former, the last several minutes where Greg Peck is involved in a life-or-death with Bob Mitchum; and the remake, where Robert DeNiro are getting hot and heavy and all of a sudden, he takes a bite out of her face (which sent ML jumping up, screaming and running out of the room.

Great question!
1. Chariots of Fire. Scotland v France. Eric Liddel is pushed down on the inside of the track. He gets back up and beats them all.
2. The look on Liam Neeson’s face in the very last scene of Les Mis.
3. Neo stops the bullets.

Okay, so those weren’t chills up my spine. Maybe I just had to go to the bathroom.
Oops, I did.

Okay, to business. And in no particular order of merit.
1. The Natural: Glenn Close gets the usher to give her letter to Robert Redford. The cop hands RR the letter. He doesn’t read it at first (audience yelling at this point, “Read it, read it!”). Then he does. And hits the homer, etc etc. YEE-uh!
2. To Kill A Mockingbird: Scout and Jem escape death at the end of the film, due to the help of the mysterious Boo Radley (played by Robert Duvall, his first film). Gregory Peck walks up to Boo, shakes his hand, and says, “Thank you…thank you for my children.”
3. Saving Private Ryan: 3/4 of the movie is gone and they still haven’t found the guy. Then…they do.
4. Best Years of Our Lives: A couple here: a. Harold Russell (a real life WWII vet and double amputee) confronts his longtime sweetheart, tells her that they can’t marry, that she deserves better…and she responds with tough love, I’m choking up just remembering it! b. Dana Andrews, at the end of the movie, walks into the famous warplane graveyard (filmed at Davis-Monthan AFB in AZ, which is to this day…still a warplane graveyard)…and sits in the bubble of a B17, flashing back. If you haven’t seen this film, do. It’s my favorite war movie…no battle scenes, but some heart wrenching stories of the effect of war on soldiers and their loved ones. Also….bonus…a few scenes where we get to see the great Hoagy Carmichael himself tearing up the ivories.

“Earn this”, “Earn it”. in Saving Private Ryan. I saw this last night, and it choked me up again. Powerful movie. Powerful message. Makes me think about my Saviour - have I “earned” His commitment?

In the film “Gettysburg” Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, after a long fight defending Little Round Top, finds his men are out of ammunition and the Confederates are about to make another charge up the hill. They can’t retreat since they are the flank. To give up their position, in hindsight, would have changed the outcome of the battle and possibly the Civil War.
So Chamberlain gathers his officers together and proposes a tactic of a bayonette charge down the hill toward the enemy. His officers look at him like he’s nuts, but it’s the only choice he has.
When they are in position, with great courage and passion he gives the order, “Bayonettes!” Serious chills.
