American Idol and “Shout To The Lord”

I haven’t watched any of American Idol. Don’t know who’s in the final eight, don’t much care.

I’ve been reading with interest all the web reaction to the performance of “Shout To The Lord” on A.I., and specifically the replacement of the name “Jesus” with “Shepherd” (and the return of “Jesus” the next night, apparently).

My first gut reaction, based on my own years of experience in the music industry. was this: I bet they didn’t even ask legal permission to change the word. And they probably got a nice friendly phone call from someone’s lawyer, and they re-did it the next night to correct the error. But surely the A.I. juggernaut has enough sense to ask for permission to change a copyrighted song.

Nope.

Here’s a statement from Hillsong Church on CBN.com - no one asked.

Don’t mess with copyrights. ;-)

Very interesting Paul. I just linked you and this to my post to update things.

I’ll be honest, Paul. I watched it and it just felt empty; it was missing something. Maybe worship?

HA! The copyright strikes again. Where’s RIAA to sue their butts off?

No, seriously, that’s pretty funny. You’d thing they have some, uh, experience at this sort of thing. Maybe experience don’t count for much? And you’re the only person I’ve seen mention that particular aspect of the change.
